The Boaden “Nigger“ Blackfish fishing reel depicted below enjoyed only a brief period of exposure on the Australian market. Soon after the reel’s appearance (we believe in 1955) some members of the general public protested against the racist connotation of the name “Nigger”. As a result of this unprecedented reaction, Reg Boaden stopped production and recalled all “Nigger” reels from wholesalers. Only a very small number of “Nigger” reels survived, thus making them extremely rare! Sometime later in 1956, Reg Boaden produced a new name for his Blackfish reel “Sportsmaster”, stamped in relief (i.e. embossed) on a brass enameled disc. Ladd B. 2009.

HAMILTON Fishing Reels.
This segment below features Blackfish fishing reel models which were meticulously hand crafted by John Hamilton who was employed as a Toolmaker for Corio Air Engineering Pty Ltd, located in Geelong Victoria. John made various reels when he spent numerous extra hours at the Corio Air Engineering factory. In December 2011, I had the pleasure of interviewing John. He spoke among other things about the only Crouch type reel he made. He said: “I used the Crouch No 1 stamped spool for my reel, back in the year of the Olympics, in 1956“.
John Hamilton further advised that after he retired from BHP Steels Newcastle in 2002, he started a new venture which he referred to as “Hand Crafted Reels”, which included his own designed Blackfish and Fly Reels, produced for the angling market. His products are hand machined from aluminium alloy stock bar in his workshop located at Yarravelle, NSW. John proudly told me that he is 82, and still loves his craft of making high quality Blackfish-Luderick fishing reels. Bernie Ladd, 2011.

John Hamilton advertisement 2002.
"We are Australia's leading manufacturer of Hand Crafted Fly Fishing and Luderick Reels.
We manufacture our reels from the highest quality marine grade aluminium and stainless steel. We consider our reels to be made to a standard not approached by other manufacturers. The spool has been fabricated from marine grade aluminium and fitted with double sealed stainless steel ball races.
The back plates are made from structured grade (high tensile), aluminium for maximum strength, stability and durability. The reels have two types of finishes. One is acid etched, chrome plated and powder coated baked enamel for maximum corrosion resistance. The second finish is a hard anodising finish carried out in an electro plating process. Both finishes enhance the reel's appearance.
We also supply a unique range of handmade floats and fishing rod sacks."

An interesting era of fishing items made at Government run and privately operated engineering maintenance workshops. Engineers, Toolmakers and highly skilled Fitter & Turners, who in some circumstances were on emergency stand-by maintenance duties at Government run maintenance Workshops . Some of these skilled employees engaged during their spare time in hobby craft by producing their own much loved models of fishing equipment. Blackfish reels, Crouch type reels, Fly reels, Game reels, Seamartin type reels and fishing Lures were often popular items created by these enthusiasts during the maintenance and production down-times. During those down-times a floor supervisor would approach an employee and say: “Work on your foreigner”. This was done to create an impression in the eyes of senior production managers that workers were busily engaged in company work projects. Thus these workshop-made reels, or any other items made during these 'down-times' were known or referred to as “Foreigners”.
It is also pertinent to state that especially during the war periods (i.e. WWI and WWII), due to war effort production, there were shortages of fishing items on the retail market. Hence these workshop practices were especially common during those turbulent times. Ladd B. 2007.
Depicted below are examples of Blackfish - Luderick reels made at various Workshops in Australia.
